If you enjoy snow skiing, you know that you have to look ahead at where you want to go rather than looking down at your skis if you have any hope of staying upright. Gymnasts must look at where they will be going in a second, not where they are at the moment. Karate instructors will tell you that once you begin a kick that is meant to break a board in half, you must assume that you will succeed and visualize yourself kicking through the board. If you doubt your ability to perform in any sport or risky physical endeavor, you are better off doing something else that you are sure about. Even indecision in traffic, when you are not sure if you should merge into traffic or hold back, can be dangerous: many accidents are the result of a hesitant driver sending mixed signals to nearby drivers.
Action starts with thought. However, thought requires a brain, which turns thoughts into signals for your whole body, so the instructions that come from your brain are what run your body — whether or not those instructions are a faithful representation of your mind. An unhealthy brain will distort what your mind wants to convey. This is why brain health is such an important topic: you want and need your brain to serve you as you intend it to.
O.K. to corral your thoughts
In an episode of the original Star Trek series, the crew was transported to a surreal version of the old American West, and were being forced into a gunfight that they would certainly lose. There was strong evidence that the whole experience was an illusion, and Spock proved that it could not be real, yet it felt and looked real to the crew. Apparently one crew member had already been shot and killed. Spock explained that “his mind killed him” because he thought the bullets were real. He further explained that we perceive reality through our senses, and once we are convinced of reality, our bodies respond.
The crew was about to be mowed down in the gunfight, and they had to be convinced that it was all illusion to survive the battle. Spock said, “the smallest doubt would be enough to kill you.” He was saying that their brains would tell them that they had died, and that they would actually die, because what the brain tells the body will happen, if it is physically possible for it to do so. The brain controls the body; it issues the commands that the body will follow if it is able.
Like the crew, we may agree that we need to have a “can do” attitude, that it will help us perform, yet we find that attitude illusive. Like the crew, we find our thoughts hard to control. Two things are necessary: a healthy brain and a trained brain. A healthy brain is capable of providing correct instructions, and a trained brain will create those instructions as you desire. We know that there are important physical steps we can take to make the brain physically healthy. Let’s focus on brain training, because most of us know little about that.
Brains and brawn? You bet!
In an article published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, researchers conducted a nine-week study of exercising participants split into two groups: one with the addition of brain endurance training (BET) to their exercise regimen, and one without BET. Both groups did chest press and squat jump exercises to exhaustion, to the limit of what they could do, for six weeks. The BET group was able to do more exercises before exhaustion than the control group by the middle and end of the study, and the benefits of BET remained for weeks after the discontinuation of BET.
The study showed that the brain could be trained, not just the muscles, and the brain could somehow get better performance out of muscles that normally would have reached their limit. This is obviously helpful to strength trainers and athletes, but it also is a message to each of us: the brain is in control.
Other studies show similar results. As published in the European Journal of Sport Science, researchers studied what would happen if BET was provided separately and before exercise sessions, as pre-training for the exercise. Again, the BET group did better: they improved 24% in their exercise performance against only 12% improvement for the control group. Also, the BET group showed higher prefrontal oxygenation during the exercise tasks, showing greater performance of the physical brain from the training.
Fit for exercise; fit for life
Perhaps fitness centers of the future will include mental training with physical training. We see that fitness training involves the whole body. But we all need brain training to be healthy because our brains rule our bodies.
There are many studies showing the health value of a positive attitude. In one study published in Psychological Science, researchers tested the health effects of positive emotions through changes in vagal tone (the vitality of the vagus nerve, which is the fundamental component of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system), which can be indirectly measured through heart rate variability (HRV) tests. Their experiment showed an upward spiral in vagal tone with positive emotions, greater social connections, and physical health, where each reinforced the others.
The brain is feeding either health-promoting or health-degenerating signals to the body all the time — it never takes a break. Of course its signals will affect physical performance, because it affects the whole body, including itself. You aren’t aware of much of what your brain is signaling, but you see the affects of those signals in your health. Science has shown us how remarkably complex brain function really is, and it is not just something we can control simply by will.
In pet training classes, we see dogs and cats doing remarkable tricks that seem very human-like, certainly that are not normal for those pets to perform. How do the trainers get the pets to do many of these tricks? They start with the pet’s normal instincts and brain wiring to get them to do things that are unusual, then reward the correct behavior. Eventually the pet is trained and doesn’t need the reward. The trainers‘ secret is knowing how to make the pet’s brain respond in desired ways so the pet will do the tricks. They understand how the pet brain works.
Treat the brain on its terms…
In the Star Trek episode, McCoy objected to Spock’s comment that they must disbelieve the bullets’ reality with, “We’re just human beings. We can’t just turn (belief) on or off.” Indeed — we are just human beings who have remarkably complex brains which don’t always seem to operate as we expect or want.
We have to work with our brains as they are, not as we think they should be. There are many components and many aspects to our brains. They store inputs from all our senses, co-mingled with our thoughts and beliefs at the time a memory is formed, and that memory stays with us. Early-life memories are the majority of our brain training, and are influencing us today even if they are consciously forgotten. So brain training has to deal with the foundational training already there; otherwise, we will find ourselves blocked in successfully training a positive outlook. Science has given us amazing tools to see how the brain is physically responding to training, so we know what training is actually working. it isn’t just a matter of repeating positive phrases to yourself or trying to force yourself to think positively. You have to work with the brain on its terms. Although physical training is very valuable and healthful, it pales in comparison to brain training. You need your brain working correctly, unencumbered by past negatives, if the “real you” is to shine through. The real you is a healthy you — make it your reality.
Dr. Nemec’s Review
If you believe you will receive whatever you believe, whether positive or negative.
What is fear?
It is believing the worst possible outcome, and thinking on it repetitively, so much so it can paralyze you with anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. Where did that come from? Your thoughts.
As a man thinks, so is he.
What are you thinking about is the question, because what you think about you become. Most people base their thoughts on the five sense information coming in through their senses. But the problem isn’t the five senses as much as the perception, the belief system, and the programming in the mind-brain connection.
When did the brain get programmed?
It started when you were inside your mother‘s womb. It continued in your early life. This programming is the most foundational of all — it is called subconscious programming. It’s also called automatic response programming. 95% of your thoughts and responses in life are automatically generated from this early life programming. For most of our lives we are not consciously aware each moment, but instead are drawing on previous programming of the subconscious mind from early in life.
The basis of fear
There are two major foundations of fear in our life, and both of them can be reprogrammed. The first one began in the beginning with our original ancestors.
Neanderthal beginning
If you believe in an evolution beginning, then the basis of fear is survival built into the human program. You would be afraid of things that could kill you. This would be important for the survival of the species.
Creation beginning
If you believe that God created Adam and Eve, then fear is a product of the fall of man. When man disobeyed the Father in heaven, they unknowingly opened the door to fear and death by buying into Satan‘s lie.
Either way, fear is programmed into us subconsciously from the beginning. So the question is, what do you do with this fear, because it sends the wrong messages to the hundred trillion cells in your body which will lead to dysfunction and disease eventually?
Read the field
Quantum mechanics and the discoveries in quantum fields has made it possible to develop amazing new technology — from pocket telephone computers, all the way to medical scanning devices. One of those devices is used to measure brain waves in every area of the brain. At Revolution New Medicine we have spent the last 40 years working with quantum physic technology evolving from CT scans to 3-D brain imaging to image the mental, emotional and physical function of the brain, not only reading present conscious patterns, but also able to analyze deep subconscious patterns from early in life. This information is invaluable once it’s plugged into a protocol that can analyze it with 40 years of data in the field.
Seeing is believing
The beauty of technology is we’ve developed our 3-D brain imaging so you can see subconscious and conscious stress programs that are not just thoughts but actually have physical identities — meaning they have grown neuron pathways from the brain to the body, including the organs, glands, tissues, muscles and the individual cells.
Now let’s go back to our original statement: if you believe, you will receive whatever you believe in. What is the problem with this? We think all we have to do is put our conscious mind to the task or goal and rise up to the occasion and achieve the desired outcome. Isn’t this correct? No, it is not correct because 95% of your belief is subconscious, not conscious, and it’s based on fear programming from early childhood — you do not remember it. That’s why it’s subconscious.
Have you ever noticed many people make New Year’s resolutions, set goals, and work hard to improve themselves, yet most people will fail — and it’s not because they’re not trying. They are trying with all of their conscious might, but they aren’t addressing the problem. It’s the underlying subconscious program: that’s the problem.
The answer
At Revolution New Medicine, not only can we identify subconscious and conscious programming that is stress based, but we can also see when it’s been released and reprogrammed with the right information — and we can see this in every part of your brain.
Each part does its part
Some parts of your brain make up the emotional part, other parts of your brain comprise the cognitive thinking part, other portions are sending messages to the muscles, glands and organs, and yet other components are picking up the sensations from the environment around you and deciding what to do with the information. The brain has the greatest complexity found in the body, and this is what has to be addressed the most in mental, emotional, and physical health. This is also the most important area to be addressed in athletic performance and longevity seeking.
Why was it so hard for Star Trek’s crew to believe that what they saw and heard with their senses was a lie— that it was not the truth, but just an illusion? Because they had subconscious programming with those five senses from early childhood saying that they were seeing a gun that shoots bullets, and those bullets are real bullets which have the power to take my life. Spock, on the other hand, didn’t have that subconscious programming because he didn’t operate by the five senses, but by simple logic. So he figured out the answer, but the crew had a very difficult time accepting or receiving the answer because of their early life programming.
If you believe, you will receive what you believe in; that is, if you have released negative and faulty subconscious programming, and it’s been verified by imaging, then you reprogrammed that with truth which was also verified with imaging. Then your belief has been transformed with the truth, and this will set you free from all fear, from all doubt, and will be the single greatest factor affecting your mental, emotional, and physical health and longevity.
