For decades, neuroscience has focused on one of the smallest components of the nervous system — the individual neuron. Scientists have carefully mapped how neurons communicate, how neurotransmitters pass signals across synapses, and how specific brain regions contribute to memory, movement, language, and emotion.
While these discoveries have transformed our understanding of the brain, they reveal only part of the story. A growing body of research suggests that the true power of the brain does not lie within individual neurons, but in the collective activity of billions of neurons working together as one integrated system.
When large populations of neurons synchronize their electrical activity, they generate organized electrical and magnetic fields that can be measured with electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). These large-scale brain fields are no longer viewed as simple by-products of neural activity. Increasing evidence indicates that they help coordinate communication across widespread brain networks, allowing separate regions of the brain to function as a unified whole.
This represents one of the most important shifts occurring in modern neuroscience. The brain is increasingly understood not as a collection of isolated parts, but as a dynamic, self-organizing network whose health depends on coherence.
The Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts
A recent study published in Cerebral Cortex demonstrates that higher brain function emerges from coordinated activity across extensive neural networks rather than from isolated neurons or even isolated brain regions. Thinking, memory, attention, emotional regulation, and conscious awareness are not produced by single cells. They emerge from billions of neurons communicating with remarkable precision across the entire brain.
Just as no individual musician creates a symphony, no individual neuron creates the mind. The remarkable properties we call intelligence, consciousness, creativity, and emotional stability emerge only when billions of neurons work together in harmony.
The Brain Generates More Than Electrical Signals
One of the most influential studies in this field was published in Neuron by Dr. Flavio Fröhlich and Dr. David McCormick. For many years neuroscientists assumed that the electrical fields generated by the brain were merely an unavoidable consequence of neurons firing. Their research demonstrated something much more significant…
The brain’s own internal electrical fields can influence surrounding neurons and help synchronize large populations of brain cells. Rather than serving as passive reflections of neural activity, these naturally generated fields appear to contribute to the organization of large-scale brain communication. In other words, the brain helps coordinate itself through the collective electrical environment created by billions of neurons acting together.
Health Depends Upon Coherence
This concept was reinforced by Dr. Michael Breakspear in his landmark review published in Nature Neuroscience. His conclusion was striking. Healthy brain function depends upon coordinated communication among large-scale neural networks.
When synchronization is lost, communication becomes less efficient, and disorders affecting cognition, attention, mood, and behavior become increasingly likely. Many neurological and psychiatric diseases are now understood less as problems of individual brain regions and more as disorders of network communication.
The problem is often not the individual parts. The problem is that the parts are no longer working together.
Why This Matters for Every Organ in the Body
The brain is the master regulator of the human body:
- Every heartbeat.
- Every breath.
- Every hormone.
- Every immune response.
- Every digestive function.
- Every stress response.
- Every voluntary movement.
- Every emotional reaction.
- Every thought.
All are coordinated through neural networks that communicate continuously with the autonomic nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system.
When the brain functions as one coherent system, these regulatory pathways communicate more efficiently, supporting healthy physiological balance throughout the body. When brain networks become fragmented or dysregulated, the consequences extend far beyond cognition. Emotional regulation, stress adaptation, hormonal balance, immune function, sleep quality, cardiovascular regulation, and metabolic health may all be affected because each depends on coordinated brain regulation.
An Orchestra Rather Than Individual Instruments
Imagine walking into a concert hall moments before the performance begins. Every musician is highly trained. Every instrument is perfectly tuned. Yet each musician begins playing a different composition. Although every instrument is functioning perfectly, the result is noise.
Now imagine the conductor raises the baton. Instantly every instrument becomes synchronized. Nothing changed about the individual musicians. Nothing changed about the instruments.
Only one thing changed. Coordination.
Harmony emerged because every part began functioning together. The brain operates in much the same way. Its greatest strength is not found within individual neurons but within the extraordinary coordination of billions of neurons functioning as one integrated network.
The Future of Neuroscience
Modern neuroscience is steadily moving away from a reductionist view of the brain. The question is no longer simply, “What does this neuron do?” or “What does this brain region control?” The more important question has become, “How do billions of neurons organize themselves into a coherent system capable of producing thought, consciousness, emotion, and health?”
The answer appears to lie in synchronization. When billions of neurons communicate in harmony, they generate coherent large-scale electrical fields that reflect—and help support—the integrated activity of the brain. A coherent brain is capable of clearer thinking, greater emotional resilience, improved adaptability to stress, and more effective regulation of the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems.
The future of brain science may not be found by studying individual neurons in isolation. It may be found by understanding how billions of neurons become one.
Dr. Nemec’s Review
The present article published in the Cerebral Cortex is saying that it’s the field, the electrical field that the brain generates as a whole — this is what controls the function of virtually all of the body. No longer can you look at individual brain areas and say this one does this and that one does that. They do their functions, but those functions are either multiplied positively when all brain areas are in coherence, or they’re multiplied negatively if all the brain areas are not in balance — just like all the instruments playing with no one conducting them.
The predominant quantum physics theory today is quantum field theory, meaning everything is in a field — not individual parts. So we go from the subatomic world to the world of brain, balance, and high level of mental-emotional physical health. Everything is related to the field. Einstein said the field is everything
How does this pertain to your life? What’s the take-home message for you?
Don’t focus on the small things, the individual things in life — see the big picture. Look at it from the satellite view. Many times we get stuck in time past or time future and the physicality that’s presented by the five senses. Don’t get caught up with all of this, but instead see the the grand scheme. What does is all mean?
What brings the most balance to the brain?
A heart-entrained brain instead of a mind of early life programming-entrained brain. Unconditional love flowing from the heart into the brain balances the brain.
Conditional love flowing from the mind into the brain causes imbalances, emotional highs and lows, anxiety and depression, and leads to major dysfunction in the body — including cancer. We have had many patients over the last 40 years come in with a diagnosis of cancer after a completely unexpected divorce — this is a prime example of conditional love. This is what we call human love, self love, or “I love you if you meet my needs. If you don’t need my needs, I don’t love you anymore. Your love is to serve me.”
This is the opposite of unconditional love, which is God‘s love within us, within our hearts, flowing to the brain; flowing to the body.
At
Revolution New Medicine we track brain balance with 3-D brain imaging and specialized brain mapping. This is how we know without guessing what the field of the brain is: we can see it. We can measure it. There’s no guessing about the single most important aspect of your physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being. It’s your brain and the field it emanates.
“There is no place in this new kind of physics both for the field and matter, for the field is the only reality.” — Albert Einstein
Patient ask us all the time, “What’s the best thing I can take to balance my brain?”
Here they are:
For your brain to work right you need the basic vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and cofactors — all of these are in
Essential Food 1 and
Essential food 2. Without these, the brain doesn’t even have the component parts to work, let alone optimize. When the cells are deficient, they die prematurely, or turn malignant, so that’s why we need the bare essentials first.
From there, we have the two most important brain components that make up virtually all of your brain cells: the two omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. But not just any EPA/DHA!
The one that we have formulated, called
Ultra EPA/DHA, is a unique patented blend that makes it ultra stable: over five times less prone to oxidation and free radical formation. It’s also in a form that can enter the cell membrane much easier than standard fish oil or algae oil. These two factors make it unique; but most importantly, the patterned formula makes it ultra stable. Much of the EPA and DHA being purchased and consumed today is somewhat rancid because it’s not stabilized, and these fatty acids are highly unstable!
Can you imagine taking something that you think is greatly improving your health and it’s actually doing the opposite — harming, not helping? So it is with much of the EPA/DHA on the market today.
And finally, there’s our
BLC, which is a phospholipid complex. Phospholipids compose the majority of the brain.
