For centuries people have assumed that the conscious mind is in control. We believe that because we are aware of our thoughts, we are directing our lives. We assume that our decisions, emotions, health, and behaviors originate from conscious thinking.
Modern neuroscience tells a very different story. The conscious mind is only the visible tip of an enormous iceberg. Beneath conscious awareness lies a vast network of neural activity that is constantly processing information, making predictions, regulating the body, storing memories, forming habits, shaping emotions, and influencing nearly every decision we make. While the exact percentage cannot be measured, neuroscientists estimate up to 99% of brain processing occurs outside conscious awareness.
That hidden brain never sleeps. It never takes a vacation. It is working every second of every day—and every second of every night.
Now, a remarkable new study has revealed something that was once thought impossible. Even under general anesthesia, when conscious awareness is completely absent, your brain is still learning.
Your Brain Is Still Listening While You Are Unconscious
A new groundbreaking study published in Nature challenged one of neuroscience’s longest-held assumptions. Researchers recorded the activity of individual neurons within the hippocampus during brain surgery while patients were fully anesthetized with propofol. The hippocampus is one of the brain’s most important centers for learning, memory formation, and the integration of new experiences.
Scientists expected the hippocampus to become largely inactive once consciousness disappeared. Instead, they discovered something extraordinary. Even while patients were completely unconscious, individual neurons continued processing language. The hippocampus distinguished meaningful words from meaningless sounds, differentiated grammatical categories, predicted upcoming words before they occurred, and altered its activity through repeated exposure.
In other words, the brain continued learning even though the conscious mind was completely offline. Neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to rewire itself — continued during anesthesia.
The conscious mind was absent. The unconscious brain was still working.
The Hidden Brain Is Always Working
This discovery fits perfectly with decades of neuroscience research showing that conscious awareness represents only a small portion of total brain function. A major review published in Neuroscience of Consciousness concluded that countless neural computations occur continuously outside awareness. Before a thought ever enters consciousness, the brain has already analyzed incoming information, compared it with past experiences, evaluated potential threats, predicted likely outcomes, and prepared possible responses.
Consciousness often arrives late to the conversation. Your brain has already been working.
Another landmark review published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences demonstrated that many of our most important mental activities — including habits, emotional reactions, relationship patterns, attention, motivation, judgments, and even many decisions — operate automatically beneath conscious awareness. Much of what we call “personality” is actually the expression of deeply learned neural programs.
Your Body Listens to the Hidden Brain
This hidden system governs far more than thoughts. It regulates virtually every major function within your body.
Without your awareness, it controls:
• your heartbeat
• your breathing
• your digestion
• hormone production
• immune surveillance
• inflammation
• blood pressure
• mitochondrial energy production
• sleep cycles
• pain perception
• tissue repair
Every moment, millions of neural signals travel from the brain to every organ and every cell. The brainstem maintains life. The hypothalamus regulates hormones. The amygdala evaluates danger. The hippocampus compares every new experience with stored memories.
The autonomic nervous system adjusts every organ system. You never consciously tell your immune system what to do. You never consciously instruct your heart when to beat. Your hidden brain is doing it all.
One of the greatest gifts — and greatest vulnerabilities — of the human brain is neuroplasticity.
The Brain Predicts More Than It Reacts
One of the most important discoveries in modern neuroscience is that the brain is primarily a prediction machine. It is constantly asking:
“Based upon everything I have experienced before… what is most likely to happen next?”
Those predictions influence what we notice, what we ignore, how we feel, how we interpret other people — even how our immune system prepares itself.
When the brain predicts danger, it prepares the body for survival. When it predicts safety, it shifts the body toward healing, maintenance, repair, and growth. Your biology follows your brain’s predictions.
Healing Requires Rewriting the Hidden Programs
Neuroplasticity is occurring whether we recognize it or not. The hidden brain never stops learning.
Final Thoughts
The study showing that the brain continues learning under anesthesia is much more than a fascinating scientific discovery. It is a powerful reminder that life is shaped far more by what happens beneath conscious awareness than by what we merely think about.
Your unconscious brain is always listening, always adapting, always learning, and always preparing your body for what it believes is coming next.
That means the most important question you can ask yourself is not: “What am I thinking?”
The deeper question is: “What have I repeatedly taught my hidden brain to believe?”
Because those hidden beliefs eventually become your habits, your emotions, your relationships, your physiology, your health.
And, ultimately… Your life.
1. Outpatient Comprehensive Teaching and Treatment Program-has the most benefit of teaching, treatment, live classes and personalized coaching. This program has the most contact with Dr. Nemec with 3- 6 month programs that can be turned into a regular checking and support program for life. This is our core program that has helped so many restore their health and maintain that restoration for years.
2. Inpatient Comprehensive Teaching and Treatment Program-is our four-week intensive inpatient program for those that are not in driving distance, usually over 4-hour drive. This is the program that is an intensive jumpstart with treatment, teaching, live classes and coaching designed for all our international patients along with those in the US that do not live in Illinois. This program is very effective especially when combined with our new membership program support.
