Where Creativity and the “Aha!” Moment Come From
Some problems are solved step-by-step through careful reasoning. Other problems are solved in an instant. A sudden flash of insight appears — the classic “Aha!” moment. Many of the greatest discoveries in history came this way.
  • Archimedes discovering buoyancy
  • Einstein dreamed riding on a beam of light
  • Kekulé visualizing the ring structure of benzene in a dream
Modern neuroscience now shows that two different modes of thinking exist in the brain:
  1. Analytical reasoning
  2. Insight-based creativity
These two modes rely on different neural processes and often involve different hemispheric specializations in the brain.
The Right Brain: The Source of Insight
Creative breakthroughs typically occur when the brain forms unexpected connections between distant ideas. This type of thinking requires a broad, open search through many possible associations.
Neuroscience research has long linked this type of wide associative processing with networks that are more active in the right hemisphere of the brain, especially the right temporal and parietal regions.
Recent research continues to support this model.
A new study published in BMC Psychology examined the structural brain wiring associated with creative insight. Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), researchers discovered that individuals who frequently solve problems through sudden insight show distinct patterns of white-matter connectivity that allow broader semantic activation and cognitive flexibility. These networks allow the brain to connect ideas that appear unrelated — the foundation of creativity.
Insight solutions are also characterized by a unique electrical signature in the brain. Just before an insight occurs, studies consistently show:
  • a brief increase in alpha brain waves, which suppress external distractions
  • followed by a burst of gamma activity, representing the sudden integration of new information
This electrical shift reflects the brain reorganizing information until a new connection suddenly becomes conscious.
The Left Brain: The Analytical Gatekeeper
The left hemisphere of the brain processes information differently. It tends to focus on:
  • language
  • logic
  • structured reasoning
  • step-by-step problem solving
Neuroscientists refer to this as fine semantic processing — narrowing possibilities down to the most likely interpretation. This is essential for mathematics, language, and scientific analysis.
However, there is a trade-off. Because the left brain focuses strongly on dominant interpretations, it can sometimes suppress weaker or unusual associations. These weaker associations are often exactly where creative insights originate.
In other words, the analytical brain can sometimes filter out the very ideas that lead to breakthrough thinking.
Creativity Often Appears When the Brain Relaxes
One of the fascinating discoveries in creativity research is when insight tends to occur. Creative breakthroughs rarely appear when a person is intensely concentrating. They tend to emerge when the brain relaxes. For example:
  • walking
  • daydreaming
  • just before falling asleep
  • dreaming
During these states the brain shifts away from strict analytical control and allows broader associative networks to activate. This allows distant ideas to recombine until a new pattern suddenly emerges.
When the connection becomes conscious, the person experiences the Aha! moment.
Creativity Comes From Network Cooperation
Modern brain imaging now shows that creativity is not confined to a single brain region. Instead it involves the interaction of three major brain networks:
  1. Default Mode Network. Generates ideas and internal associations.
  2. Salience Network. Detects important emerging insights.
  3. Executive Control Network. Evaluates and refines ideas logically.
Research shows that highly creative thinkers demonstrate greater flexibility between these networks, allowing them to shift more easily between spontaneous idea generation and analytical evaluation. In other words:
The right-brain style networks generate ideas, while the left-brain analytical networks refine them. Creativity emerges when the brain allows these systems to cooperate.
Dr. Nemec’s Review
What’s the take-home message with this research?
The brain has two powerful ways of thinking: one is analytical, the other is creative. The analytical brain works step-by-step and is essential for precision and logic. But the creative brain connects distant ideas and produces sudden breakthroughs. The greatest innovations in human history occur when these two systems work together:
  • The creative right brain generates the idea.
  • The analytical left brain develops it.
Insight may appear suddenly, but it is the product of a brain that allows new connections to form beyond conventional thinking. And those flashes of insight have changed the course of human history.
How can we really access this, how can we train ourselves to receive the insight, the intuition, the creative idea, the vision?
The research started to touch in to it. They connected alpha waves (relaxation) to gamma waves (concentration), but even deeper than alpha waves for relaxation are theta waves. Theta waves occur in REM sleep and meditation. Theta waves produce even deeper relaxation and super learning. When we are in theta brain state we are in an accelerated state for growing neuron pathways and writing neural programs. Ideally to receive the aha moment, to be open for the vision, the imagination, the insight and intuition, we want to be in theta-gamma brain state — more accurately stated, theta-gamma synchrony or coherence. When a person is in Theta-Gamma Synchrony, they are in the highest level of function and performance — physically, mentally, emotionally, cognitively. This state is also termed:
  • being in the Flow
  • being in the field
  • being in the zone
This is the goal of everyone that we see at Revolution New Medicine. This is achieved with a special therapy called heart-brain entrainment
As a person thinks in their heart, so will their spirit program their brain.
Brain-heart food
Patients over the years have asked, “what’s the best supplements for the brain and heart?” The answer is found in physiology and cell biology.
The brain itself is composed of three major components:
  1. Phospholipids.
  2. EPA
  3. DHA
The phospholipids are found in our product named BLC.  Combined with our product Ultra EPA/DHA, they provide the brain-heart foods not only critical for brain and neurological function — they are all also critical as anti-inflammatory molecules.
For the heart, the important concept is energy, because the heart is constantly beating — it’s a muscle constantly contracting, and its energy comes from ATP produced by the mitochondria
and the most important co-factor in producing ATP is found in Ultra CoQ10. Also very important is the mineral magnesium in a special chelated form Ultra Magnesium because magnesium is critical for muscle contraction.
Last but not least is a product designed for both brain, heart and liver because these three organs are the most important in the entire body. The product designed for the three is Essential Food 2.
