A new study in PNAS tested a striking question: can gut microbiota carry biological “instructions” that shape the nervous system? Researchers transferred primate gut microbiota into mice and observed changes in mouse neurodevelopment that the authors describe as “evolutionarily salient”—suggesting the microbiome can act as a powerful programming layer that influences brain-related development.
Why this matters:
It upgrades the microbiome from a background factor to something closer to a systems-level regulator of the brain — not simply digestion, not simply immunity, but neurodevelopmental shaping.
Gut-to-brain signals can activate frontal cortex networks within moments
In a recent paper in iScience, researchers demonstrated that intestinal glucose can rapidly activate brain pathways through the vagus nerve, and that this signaling involves dopamine pathways that connect to the frontal cortex.
Then comes the detail that explains so much about modern life:
Psychological and dietary stress dampened this gut-to-brain activation.
Translation:
Your gut can send information upward that shapes brain activity fast — but chronic stress can distort, mute, or scramble that signal. So what feels like “my mind is failing me” may sometimes be “my signaling pathways are under stress load.”
In simplified form, the pathway looks like this:
Microbial pattern ? gut sensory cells ? vagus nerve circuitry ? brain-driven behavior
This isn’t just “microbes produce chemicals that influence mood.”
It’s a defined bioelectric / neuro-sensory channel for microbial information.

In the amazing PNAS journal research, when they took the intestinal microbiota from a primate — a higher, intelligent and more developed species chimpanzee — and implanted that into a mouse’s G.I. tract, it affected the mouse’s neurodevelopment in programming its brain.
What does this mean?
Our intestinal tract can actually not only control our brain but can program it. Wow!
Now can you start to see how important food choices are, and not only the choices but the mental-emotional state that you are in when you make the choice? So now food has to move into a much higher importance in our health — not just simply as a pleasure addiction, but seen more as a brain balancer and neural programmer.
Food addiction is the biggest addiction in the world today. This is because it is the easiest and least expensive pleasure to counter a painful world, a painful life. We have been trained in this addiction since early childhood. It is a difficult one to break, but knowledge is power when that knowledge is based in truth.
The second study published in Iscience supports this concept even further. They showed that what you eat, in real time, affects the vagus nerve control of dopamine neurotransmission in the brain. Dopamine is the reward motivation and pleasure neurotransmitter. The study showed that intestinal glucose affects frontal lobe of the brain dopamine levels immediately. The research went on to say that stress throws the signal completely off — this can be mental, emotional, or dietary stress. The vagus nerve is the major nerve of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system. It controls your resting, digesting and healing. And this parasympathetic healing channel to the brain is completely thrown off with mental, emotional, or dietary stress — especially glucose stress, which is sugar and carbs.
Now let’s expound on this a bit. Dopamine is a very important neurotransmitter for reward and motivation, but this is meant to be stimulated as a reward and motivation for fulfilling your purpose in life: living a heart-directed, gut-directed life — having the pleasure of fulfilling a dream or vision. But do you see how the circuit can be distorted in early childhood by making it stressed with an addiction to the pleasure of food? In essence, it makes food the purpose of life instead of true purpose, which is driving neurotransmitter production.
So what’s the take-home message?
Your gut is a direct pathway through the parasympathetic nervous system to control and program brain function, especially in the frontal and prefrontal cortex, which is where all decisions and choices are made.
