Most people think aging is just time.
Biologically, aging accelerates when the body lives in chronic threat mode—stuck in the past (regret) or the future (worry). That state drives stress chemistry, poorer sleep, higher inflammation signaling, and less repair.
Mindfulness = living in the moment, laughter, and dance: the “childlike” state that shifts stress biology and protects the brain.
The opposite of accelerated aging isn’t “trying harder.” It’s shifting into a state the body recognizes as safe enough to recover. That state looks surprisingly childlike: present, playful, curious, and moving.
Below are three research-backed pillars that support this “live in the moment” anti-aging strategy:
Mindfulness: training attention back to “now” (so the stress loop breaks)
Mindfulness isn’t about emptying the mind. It’s about returning to the present when the brain tries to get pulled into rumination of the past or worry of the future.
One of the most practical modern findings: an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program (MBSR) was shown to be non-inferior to Escitalopram (a common first-line medication) for treating anxiety disorders in a randomized clinical trial.
Why does this matter for aging?
Because anxiety isn’t just emotional — it’s a physiological pattern that repeatedly triggers stress hormones, disrupts sleep, and keeps the nervous system on high alert.
Take-home: Presence is a skill—and training it can compete with a gold-standard medication for anxiety-driven stress load.
Laughter: the fastest “cortisol downshift” (play turns off survival chemistry)
If mindfulness trains presence, laughter forces presence. You can’t fully laugh while ruminating. Laughter shifts breathing, facial muscles, vagal tone, and emotional state—pulling the body into the moment.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of interventional studies found laughter is associated with a significant reduction in cortisol, the key stress hormone. The authors report substantial average cortisol decreases across studies, with particularly strong effects in studies measuring salivary cortisol.
Take-home: Laughter isn’t fluff — it’s a measurable stress-hormone intervention that helps the body exit survival mode and re-enter recovery mode.
Dance: “the movement of a child” (creative motion that protects the aging brain)
A child’s movement is not repetitive exercise. It’s novel, coordinated, rhythmic, playful, and social—exactly the mix the brain loves. Two modern lines of evidence make dance especially “anti-aging”:
Dance changes the brain and improves cognition and quality of life (RCT evidence)
A randomized controlled trial in adults >55 used a digital somatosensory dance game (two 30-minute sessions/week for 6 months). Compared with controls, the intervention group showed measurable brain imaging changes in regions tied to motor/attention/reward systems, along with improvements in cognitive scores and quality of life, plus reduced weekday sitting time.
Take-home: Dance-based movement isn’t just “exercise” — it’s a brain-training, coordination, and engagement stimulus that shows up in imaging and cognition.
Creativity—including dance—links to “delayed brain aging” signals (brain clocks)
A new Nature Communications study used “brain clocks” (brain-age measures) and re-analyzed creative expertise and learning datasets across domains including dance. It found creative experiences were associated with delayed brain aging signals across domains, with scalable effects (expertise > learning) and network efficiency patterns consistent with plasticity.
Take-home: Creative movement is a longevity behavior for the brain — dance is creativity you do with your whole nervous system.
The “Childlike Anti-Aging Protocol” (simple, doable, repeatable):
You don’t need perfection—just repetition.
  1. Living fully in the moment.
Return to now: breath, body, senses. Break the worry loop.
  2. Laughter
One short laughter “dose” daily: funny video, laughter with others, or intentional laughter that becomes real.
  3. Dance
    Not performance—play.
Put on music, or even with no music move with novelty: steps, turns, arms, rhythm, coordination, imagination.
If you want the deepest “child effect,” add these:
  • Change the music and movement patterns regularly if you’re using music, always make it spontaneous
  • Play: no perfection, no judgment — just exploration

Dr. Nemec’s Review
What did the study show?
Simply, the life of a child is the only life that is a life. It’s a life lived fully in the moment, fully engaging with movement and activity, and measured by the laughter.
Let’s start with living more fully in the moment — what does that look like?
It looks like letting go of yesterday and letting go of tomorrow. Children don’t spend their day thinking about yesterday or thinking about tomorrow. They go play now; they live fully now. Their life revolves around now.
How much of your life is lived in the present moment? How much of your life revolves around right now?
The mind of the adult is always oscillating between past and future. It does not function in the present moment. It’s always trying to project the future from a programmed past. That’s very unlike children who only live fully in “right now”, who play on the playground in their physically or mentally “right now.”
The Journal of the American Medical Association article showed that living more fully in the moment was equivalent to pharmaceutical intervention in reducing anxiety with no side effects. Young children are not anxious. They are playing in the moment.
Next let’s talk about laughter.
Just look at a child compared to the older adult: young children average 350 laughs a day vs over 65 year-olds who average 15 a day. That is over 20 times more laughter for a child than an adult. So if we want to measure our longevity, one of the most important measures would be how much of the day are we in laughter?
Laughter significantly decreases cortisol, the stress hormone levels, up to almost 50% according to the PLOS ONE study. This is huge: just laughing decreases 50% of your stress because it shifts you into a parasympathetic-dominant, rest, digest, and healing mode.
Finally, what do children do the most?
They move, they play, they dance, they engage. And as our final studies show, the creative activity of dancing has the power to maintain healthy cognition, memory, and brain function. And most powerfully it increases quality of life. Why?
Because dance is creative: it uses different areas of the brain simultaneously. Dance is also a mind-brain-body exercise, engaging every part of you. Probably the most important benefit of all is that when it’s done spontaneously, it comes from your heart — from your spirit — into your brain, into your body, and this brings balance and harmony to every part of your being.
So what’s the take home message?
Start seeing your life through a child’s eyes, not adult eyes. Fully embracing the moment the moment. Let go of past programming and future projecting. Start playing on the playground of life right now. Start laughing more, start moving more, stop thinking so much, stop planning so much.
The body doesn’t regenerate in yesterday or tomorrow.
It regenerates in now.
Living fully in the moment trains “now.” Laughter unlocks “now.”
Dance embodies “now.”
And that “childlike now” is one of the most underused anti-aging medicines we have.
