Healing Works From the Top Down — Spirit ? Mind ? Body ? Cell ? Gene
A new study published in PLOS ONE shows that optimal health can be restored at any age — even in people who began with chronic conditions, pain, or poor well-being. Researchers followed more than 8,000 older adults and found that nearly one in four regained full wellness within just three years. But what mattered most wasn’t only diet, sleep, or exercise — it was mental and emotional wellness. Those who maintained strong psychological and emotional health at baseline were five times more likely to regain full physical wellness later. (1)
The message is simple yet revolutionary: your state of mind multiplies your physical healing capacity. Health isn’t something you lose — it’s something you can realign, rebuild, and reclaim.
Healing Happens Upstream
Most medicine treats the body — what we eat, how we move, which drugs we take — but true healing begins upstream, where perception and consciousness live. The higher you intervene — through spirit, mindset, and emotion — the greater the ripple effect on the body’s downstream systems: hormones, immunity, metabolism, and even gene expression.
When you correct a belief, you don’t just change a thought—you rewrite the instruction code that controls the entire body.
The Science of Perception: When the Mind Leads, the Body Follows
Research over the past 20 years has repeatedly shown that what you believe and perceive physically alters your biology:
  • In a landmark study, Crum & Langer (Psychological Science) told hotel housekeepers that their daily work counted as exercise. Without changing anything about their activity, they lost weight and lowered their blood pressure within a month. (2)
  • In another experiment, Crum et al. (Health Psychology) gave participants identical milkshakes but labeled one “high calorie” and the other “low calorie.” The “high-calorie” drink caused a larger drop in ghrelin, the hunger hormone — showing that belief changed metabolism. (3)
  • Yeager et al. (Nature) taught teenagers to view stress as enhancing rather than harmful. Their cortisol rhythms, heart rate, and blood pressure normalized, proving that a change in perception rewired their stress physiology. (4)
  • Davidson & McEwen (Nature Reviews Neuroscience) summarized decades of data showing that emotional appraisal directly shapes immune tone and HPA axis output — literally determining how genes and hormones respond to the world.(5)
The pattern is consistent: perception precedes physiology.
When the mind sees life differently, the body behaves differently.
The Spirit Multiplier: Meaning, Connection, and Purpose
Just as thoughts can reshape hormones, spiritual connection and purpose can recalibrate the body’s healing systems even more profoundly. Connecting with your spirit and His Spirit, the experience of awe, and being so thankful are not vague emotions — they are measurable biological states associated with better immune activity, longer lifespan, and reduced inflammation.
  • Harold Koenig’s update of the “Handbook of Religion and Health” compiles more than 3,000 studies showing that spirituality is linked with lower mortality, lower inflammation, and faster recovery from illness. (6)
  • Van Capellen et al. (Frontiers in Psychology) found that feelings of awe and gratitude stimulate vagal tone and parasympathetic balance, which improve heart rate variability and immune defense. (7)
  • Holt-Lunstad et al. (Perspectives on Psychological Science) analyzed hundreds of studies and concluded that spiritual and social connection reduces early death risk as powerfully as quitting smoking or regular exercise. (8)
  • Remškar et al. (Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice) demonstrated that mindfulness combined with movement produces larger improvements in well-being than either alone — a clear sign of synergy between body and mind.
When you connect spiritually, you create coherence in the entire system. The body follows the rhythm of meaning, not just muscle.
Why the Upstream Path Is So Powerful
Spirit supersedes mind, mind speaks to brain, brain tells all of the body what to do.
Perception determines thought, thought directs behavior, and behavior shapes biology. When your thoughts shift from fear to thanksgiving, your nervous system moves from fight-or-flight to rest-and-repair, lowering cortisol, blood sugar, and inflammation. Those small chemical shifts multiply outward — improving sleep, digestion, mood, and immunity all at once.
That’s why addressing your state of mind or state of spirit can deliver ten to a hundred times greater impact than treating only the physical body. It’s not magic — it’s hierarchy. The higher up the system you intervene, the more downstream systems you influence.
Putting It Into Practice
You can start this cascade today:
  1. Feed the body with whole, living foods and daily movement.
  2. Balance the brain through diet, lifestyle and therapies like heart-brain entrainment, heart brain coherence training.
  3. Train the mind through living fully in the moment.
  4. Center the spirit by connecting via rejoicing, thanksgiving and purpose.

When spirit, mind, and body align, the body’s healing intelligence awakens. Your cells respond to the energy you hold — peace, purpose, or fear — and reflect it in your physiology.

Closing Reflection
Health is not lost; it is misaligned. Your perception is the switch that realigns it. When you heal upstream — reconnect your spirit to His Spirit, then the mind will follow, and you set in motion biochemical miracles downstream.
Change perception, and behavior follows. Change behavior, and biology obeys. Change biology, and health is restored.
That’s the new science of wholeness. It’s not about fixing parts — it’s about remembering that the entire system is connected through a much higher Consciousness.

Dr. Nemec’s review

This PLOS study reveals an important concept that is overlooked in the world today. Any health issue — physical or mental-emotional — can be overcome if you work on the whole being, not just the parts.
The concept of treating upstream — meaning your purpose, then your heart, then your mind, then your brain. then your body — all working as one, all working in synchrony with your spirit being the ultimate influencer of the symphony Orchestra conductor — this has been forgotten, if it was ever known in the first place.
Let’s take an example. A person gets diagnosed with cancer. Does that affect only the physical? Absolutely not. It is a devastating mental-emotional concept that’s steeped in fear. Looking at this from an upstream concept: the mental-emotional far outweighs the physical, by at least five times as the PLOS study showed. So when the person gets diagnosed with cancer who didn’t even know they had cancer — instead of presenting the news with a step-by-step format to heal — just by presenting the news, the overwhelming mental-emotional concept of fear of loss of life is magnified. The name of the disease just greatly weakened the immune system, which you can rebound from.
Now look at this from a different viewpoint. Let’s say the doctor tells you that you have a diagnosis of cancer, but right away, without hesitating, he shows you a plan to work on every part of your being: your spirit, your heart, your mind, your brain and your body. He encourages you that this has the possibility to heal. We just have to treat the whole being. This would be a totally different energy, one that would not instill fear, but instead hope.
This is the only way every issue that you will ever have with your physical body — your mind or emotions — they all have to be addressed with one upstream perspective, otherwise you will not resolve the issue.
Do you really think you can heal cancer with chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy alone? This is just the physical. This is the farthest downstream. You haven’t even started upstream treatment, but instead are going right to the downstream treatment. Your treatment will kill tumors temporarily but with a high cost. They make the environment around the cells more inflammatory and more toxic and that’s no problem. If you’re working upstream and with diet, exercise, sleep, and lifestyle changes, now your body can rebound back to health.
What about anxiety and depression? How do you treat these?
They are treated the same way: upstream, all the way downstream. This is called complete holistic treatment: balancing your spirit, your heart, your brain, your mind, and your body. The world needs to have a paradigm shift in how they see health and disease: once they do, we will see transformation globally. Until that time you can choose to change your life now right now and take control of wherever you are in life, and know that you can restore your health in every part — only if you treat all parts as one, understanding who the Symphony Orchestra director is.
Who are you? Are you just a body of physical structure?
Or are you a holistic being? Because if you are, you have to treat yourself holistically, addressing all parts of your being, not just the lowest physical.
Changing diet and exercise is like pruning the leaves of a tree. Changing perception and belief is like knowing you are a branch of someone much greater who is the Tree. And connecting spiritually gets full awareness that the you — the branch of the Tree along with the Sap — are part of a Family that’s rooted and grounded in Love, who is the Father.
Food & Supplement Highlight
Living Raw Flaxseeds — Nature’s Anti-Inflammatory Seed of Life
Freshly blended living flaxseeds are one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory foods. When consumed raw and alive (not roasted or pre-ground), their delicate omega-3s remain intact, supplying abundant alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — the plant precursor to EPA and DHA. ALA cools chronic inflammation, nourishes the heart and arteries, and supports hormone balance. Beyond fats, flaxseeds contain lignans—potent phytoestrogens and antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, balance estrogen metabolism, and protect against hormone-driven cancers. Their soluble fiber feeds beneficial gut bacteria, stabilizes blood sugar, lowers LDL cholesterol, and produces short-chain fatty acids like butyrate that heal the intestinal wall. Together, this living matrix enhances oxygenation, improves mood, sharpens focus, and supports the brain’s natural anti-inflammatory state.
Ultra EPA/DHA — The Brain’s Foundational Nutrients
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are two essential omega-3 fats that make up much of the brain’s structure itself. DHA forms the cell membranes of neurons, improving electrical conductivity, plasticity, and memory, while EPA acts as the body’s master inflammation resolver, reducing cytokines and eicosanoids that fuel pain, heart disease, and cognitive decline. Supplementing with a high-purity, triglyceride-form EPA/DHA (preferably from algae or wild marine sources) restores the brain’s lipid balance, enhances neurotransmitter signaling, improves mood and resilience to stress, and protects against neurodegenerative changes associated with aging. Ultra EPA/DHA is a unique stabilized patent formula that enables the very delicate essential fatty acid molecules to remain potent and not free radical forming. This formula ensures five times greater stability and longevity of the product: EPA and DHA supplements made from oils are very sensitive to time and temperature and many times can become rancid, free radical forming without the user ever being aware. Ultra EPA/DHA resolve this issue.
Together, living raw flaxseeds feed the body’s natural omega-3 pathways, while Ultra EPA/DHA deliver the fully active anti-inflammatory molecules the brain and body depend on. One nourishes the source; the other completes the chain — creating a powerful synergy for total body and mind renewal.
