“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.” Remember that line from the Wizard of Oz? Dorothy was being terrorized by the fearsome wizard, but after Toto pulled back the curtain, it became obvious that the wizard was just an image created by a very ordinary person. The wizard had no power, only the appearance of power.

We have imaginary wizards affecting us all of the time. We can’t see or even imagine the real source of them. For some reason, we react emotionally to some of the strangest things. One person might be thrown into a panic at the sight of a spider, frantically calling out to a family member who has no such fear to kill the spider and get rid of it. Some have what is called PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) from life events that were so severe and so frightening, with recurring flashbacks to the incidents, that normal life becomes difficult if not impossible. Many of us are simply stressed out but don’t know why. We can’t see behind the curtain to what caused the stress initially, but it is having a debilitating effect on our lives now. At least some stresses are memorable, but most aren’t.

You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught
Why do stressful events that we often can’t even remember impact us now? It’s because they were foundational. Consider this: when you start out in life, you have no concept of right and wrong, true or false, good or bad. You do have a sense of comfort or pain, but that’s about it. You have to learn everything. That’s why it’s so important to protect young children from harmful thoughts. Once the bad stuff creeps in it becomes part of the base programing of that young mind.

From the musical play South Pacific, you may remember some of these lyrics:

You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear,
You’ve got to be taught from year to year,
It’s got to be drummed in your dear little ear—
You’ve got to be carefully taught!

You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
….

For the first year, a child won’t understand many words. Memories don’t depend on words however. Memories are formed from a combination of input from all the senses intermixed with the emotion and concentration level. Some memories may have been emphasized and others minimized. The most traumatic might be consciously remembered because the emotional impact makes a particularly strong memory, especially after a few years, but most are forgotten with time — except they remain at the subconscious level. They may appear in impressions, phobias, or recurring stress which seems to come out of nowhere.

We can recognize that we have certain biases and consciously choose to treat everyone equally, thus trying to override the program, but this only works on a superficial level. But the programming we received in early life directly impacts our life and our health, and we often can’t recognize it or neutralize it with conscious determination. We are living with buried memories, and some of them are stopping us from really enjoying life and sending life-affirming cellular signals throughout our bodies. This is basically a universal problem as we all carry some negative emotional baggage around with us.

Painful results
Take the simple issue of pain. Over 10% of Americans are regularly taking prescription drugs for pain. More than that use aspirin or alcohol partially to reduce pain. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) states that over 20% of Americans experience chronic pain. In a basic statistical study, published in The Journal of Pain, the researchers stated, “We found that 44.3% of adults, or 100.3 million individuals, were pain free, whereas 55.7% or 126.1 million adults reported some pain in the previous 3 months.” Pain is a big problem, but some people seem to have a high pain tolerance or simply don’t have pain, while others experience pain without any apparent cause, such as fibromyalgia. In a study published in Psychosomatic Medicine, researchers tested study participants with modest level heat pain stimulation under two conditions: when seeing emotionally neutral images, and when seeing unpleasant images. The unpleasant images were prescreened to trigger non-recallable subconscious memories. The researchers found that subconsciously activated negative emotional memories amplified pain unpleasantness similarly to consciously remembered memories. Why should either amplify pain?

There is one direct cause. When you experience mental stress, your body releases the hormone cortisol, which causes pain and inflammation. But because of “neural overlap”, mental pain and physical pain are perceived as close together. Depression is sometimes referred to as mental pain. In extreme cases, someone experiencing major mental pain will be tempted to self inflict physical pain.

There are more subtle causes for the amplified pain as well. Early life stress doesn’t go away even though it usually gets buried. The negative thoughts cause chronic stress later in life, which strains the body receiving the continual negative signals. This stress breaks down the body, leading to legitimate pain due to inflammation, damage and disease. The study showed an effect of stress through negative images, but even without those images the participants are carrying the thoughts that the images triggered. The effects of those thoughts may be low grade, but they are continuous.

Chronic stress means disease
Mental stress has been shown in multiple studies to lead to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In cases of recognized early life trauma, structural brain changes may occur that can be measured. In a study published in Brain and Behavior, researchers studied the long-term effects of childhood trauma on adult brain function. They concluded, “Specifically, the abuse scores were positively associated with network transmission inefficiency of the visual, auditory, linguistic, and motor cortex. Isolated communications in temporal cortex and supplementary motor cortex were related to emotional and physical abuse scores.” Basically brain damage occurred which impaired the brain’s ability to connect with its constituent parts, isolating them from each other.

Such brain damage leads to poor brain function overall, which shows up in lowered test scores and difficulty melding with society. But the brain controls the body, and brain malfunction means body malfunction. The first casualty of mental stress is often the immune system, where mental depression also leads to immune system depression. Hormones that were meant for “fight or flight” preparedness only are continually called upon, tearing down the body. Since the body supports the brain, if the body weakens, this will also further impact brain function. This is a no-win downward spiral.

Change course
The mostly subconscious thoughts need to change if this spiral is to be reversed. You hopefully don’t have major childhood trauma in your past, but if you are at all a typical American, you carry some mental baggage that is decreasing your level of health, You live in a time when technology and research provide a path out of the spiral. Previous generations did not have the tools to determine if therapy was repairing negative thought patterns. If you carry any baggage — and who doesn’t — this is a good time to lighten your load.

Dr. Nemec’s Review

You are a product of your environment, but most importantly, you are product of your early environment from the time you were in your mother’s womb up to age 6. This could be called the most important time of your life simply because this is when your base programs are written on the hard drive of your brain in the neural tissue itself.

Unfortunately, you did not have a say in that environment, whether positive or negative — you are a product of that environment. For most of you (90+ percent) there were enough negative factors and influences in that time of your life that stress programs were written on the hard drive of your brain.

No one is to blame
Let’s say, for example, you love to play basketball, but because your mother and father were below normal height you were classified as short by the system. Everyone knows the taller the better in basketball: very few short people have played professional level. Now you could blame your mother and father for your height, but really there’s no one to blame. They received their height from their mother and father, and so on and on. So in life, there’s never anyone to blame because you would have to go back to the beginning — but there is a much healthier way to live….

Take control of your life
So let’s say you were very short, but you still loved basketball — then you would maximize your skill to compensate for what you don’t have. In life it’s not about what you don’t have. It’s about what you do have and how you use it. Everyone could spend their whole life complaining of what they don’t have, or they could become proactive and start maximizing what they do have.

No-brainer
Your brain sends signals to the hundred trillion cell community in your body — this is how you stay healthy; this is also how you develop disease. The key question is: what influences the brain? There are only two influences on the brain. The first is the mind (subconscious predominantly and then conscious). The second is the heart, which is the portal to the spirit.

You are not a victim of your environment
It does not make a difference what your early environment was: no matter how traumatic, it can be overcome. What subconscious and conscious stress does at an early age is writing programs that control the body, and most of these programs are stress programs, producing stress molecules and inflammation each and every moment. So how do you overcome these subconscious and conscious stress programs, of which most you are not even aware?

I Can See Clearly Now
With advanced technology and imagery, we are able to now see every part of the brain and to see every brainwave produced by each and every part of the brain. This makes a very unique pattern when it’s subconscious stress and another pattern when it’s conscious stress. If you go to your family doctor feeling great and they do an EKG test on you which measures the electrical output of the heart, they can quickly screen to see if you have heart abnormalities and heart disease. It’s very clear to see when they do the printout what normal is and what abnormal is. The same holds true for brain imaging and subconscious, conscious programming. At Revolution New Medicine over the last 40 years, we have developed a protocol to measure, treat, remeasure and re-treat until balance is maintained in the brain and body. This is the most critical aspect of your health and overlooked by most everyone because you are only as healthy at the cellular level as you are at the brain signaling level.

Balanced brain equals health in every cell
What you eat, what you drink, what you breathe, how much you exercise, and how much sleep you get — these are all very important for your health. This is part of our Seven Basic Steps to Total Health, but the biggest factor is the brain, and the biggest influencers of the brain are the mind and the heart.

Follow your heart
Unfortunately, most people are subconsciously programmed for failure early in life. So no matter how much you work, how much you try to improve yourself, how much you set goals and achieve them — even if you become successful at the top in your field, even the top in the world — you are still a product your early life programming. Look at most successful people: they’ve achieved a lot in a certain area of life, but most all of them do not have a balanced life. They do not have wonderful relationships with their spouses, with their families because of their early life programming. So how do you overcome subconscious and conscious programming?

Narrow is the road and few will find it
Most people in life just work to survive and try to achieve what they would call a good life. But you cannot have a good life with bad programming. It is absolutely impossible. No matter what you achieve it will not fulfill you. You must first release the negative programming and then rewrite new programs based in Truth. Only then will you optimize your mental, emotional and physical health.

Love heals everything, including you
There are two types of love: human love, and the love of God, your Father. Human love is based on good and bad, happy and sad. This type of love loves to get something: I’ll do this for you if you do that for me — by my perception, not yours. Human love is very self-centered while the love of God is selfless. Human love is conditional, but the love of God is unconditional. So in life, health, and healing, it all comes down to God‘s love flowing in and through you. And how does this occur?

Only from the heart, not from the head; only from the spirit, not from the mind.

Once you release subconscious and conscious stress programming, and then reprogram with Truth, now the heart or spirit is controlling health instead of the mind. This is what we call total health of spirit, mind, brain, emotion, and body, and this is the only way to heal and stay healed — to thrive when you’re 105!

You will know the Truth, and because of this you will see the manifestation of the Truth in the brain imaging, and the Truth will set you free from every disease of the body and of the mind.
