Years ago, the government banned 100 watt incandescent light bulbs, and was set to ban the remaining wattage bulbs. The reason was the energy inefficiency of incandescent bulbs, and small fluorescent bulbs were much more efficient. The environmental movement was pushing to get rid of incandescents and reduce the carbon footprint of households, and the government was all too willing to take a heavy-handed approach and ban them outright. This was done despite the fact that flourescent bulbs are a significant mercury contamination source and a nightmare for the very environment these policies were attempting to rescue. Recycling them wasn’t convenient enough, and many households merely threw them away in normal trash. By injecting itself into the marketplace of consumer goods, the government attempted to artificially skew the public’s use of bulbs. But the bulb technology wasn’t in sync, not yet up to the task of providing a true environmentally-friendly solution.

Years later technology developed LED household bulbs, and industrial mass production kicked in to make them inexpensive. Meanwhile the banning process was stopped after the 100 watt bulb ban, as political winds changed. Incandescent bulbs of most wattages are freely sold, but they are not selling very well these days. The low sales volume is due to the better, longer lasting, and overall cheaper solution of LED bulbs. This shift happened by non-artificial means — it was an organic, natural, grassroots change. The public wanted a real solution and was totally happy with one that wasn’t forced upon them, but was instead saving them money. You might think that would have been an object lesson for the government, but sadly they aren’t learning. These days EV (electric vehicles) sales are being demanded by the government; currently, California is slated to completely ban the sale of any cars with gasoline engines by 2035. That ban would include the typical hybrid cars which go a long way towards cleaner fuel burning and greater efficiency. The American government has been tightening regulations and setting future emission standards to squeeze car manufacturing to produce few gas vehicles. So what is the market reaction? Hertz just recently sold a large portion of their EV fleet, dumping them onto the market, citing low demand. EV’s have been dropping in price as the supply is greater than the demand. While some like EVs, and they are efficient in fuel use, they are generally more expensive to repair, many don’t like the “range anxiety” of not being able to go anywhere without worrying about where the next charging station might be found, and were it not for government subsidies (again skewing the natural market), they would be too expensive for many car buyers. Without the restrictions and bans, these problems would be solved by technological advancements and EV’s would find their natural place in the marketplace, edging out gasoline-powered engines over time. Forcing doesn’t work, but it’s the way politicians think. And it’s the way we think all too often…

We try to force our bodies outside of their normal course through modern medicine instead of a good lifestyle, thinking we can skew nature to bend to our will. Our bodies have care instructions; mostly those are to do what is natural to do. When it comes to diet, our ancestors automatically ate those foods which helped their bodies because they lived close to nature — except for those of wealth who could eat rich foods processed by servants. Today, we don’t need servants to process our foods, because we have robotic machines to do all that work and give us the results we crave. But in doing so we have veered away from what our bodies need. We aren’t respecting the nature of our body chemistry with most of our diets in America these days. Our diet is skewed, and we want to force our bodies to cooperate with the new normal. That won’t work: not in the way we want. Our bodies will re-align with the environment in ways we don’t want.

A gut feeling
We are dealing with a living body that is capable of adjusting to its environment. In the case of our digestive tract, we almost have two living bodies in one: our own body and the colony of our gut flora. Although linked, these two “bodies” are independent in many ways. Your body provides some of the environment that the gut flora experiences, but so does the food that you eat. That’s because your food is also the food for the bacteria in your intestines, and food is a large part of any body’s environment. Good food attracts good gut bacteria, and bad food attracts bad bacteria — it’s quite simple.

Why would you care? Because the composition and activity of your gut flora either aids or harms your digestion. Some of your extraction of nutrients depends on the gut flora first breaking down some otherwise undigestible food into simpler forms that your body can then finish digesting. Good flora is a digestive aid which you need to be healthy. There are upwards of 1,000 species living in your gut, and not all of them are helpful, but without any of them your health would immediately start to decline. The composition of your gut colonies is constantly shifting in response to the food you eat, because your food is their food, and different foods favor different bacteria.

The good, the bad, and the ugly
Good bacteria can break down plant fibers that you cannot, and in doing so, release nutrients and vitamins. They can do much more, however. They can synthesize vitamin K. They can promote angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and enteric nerve function. The enteric nervous system is the largest and most complex unit of the peripheral nervous system, releasing numerous neurotransmitters to facilitate the absorptive and secretory functions of the gastrointestinal tract. Good bacteria can help seal the intestinal walls, reversing “leaky gut”, so that food products remain in the intestines instead of improperly invading the bloodstream. They can transform lignans, which are common in some seeds, vegetables, and fruit, which then help protect against various cancers and cardiovascular diseases. Good flora can protect against food contamination and some common “bugs” that may be circling your neighborhood in three ways: first, by simply having “squatter’s rights” to the intestines — they got there first, and compete with the pathogens for food and survival; second, by enhancing the immune system to be more robust; and third, by producing byproducts that the pathogenic bacteria don’t like. These effects are explained in detail in a review article published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, where researchers review these various impacts of gut flora (also called microbiota) on the human system.

The study also mentions some negative effects of bad bacteria. Some bacteria, particularly sugar-loving bacteria that reproduce very rapidly, give off toxic and inflammatory byproducts. These will increase leaky gut, dump toxins into your intestines which your body will have to fight off, and cause intestinal pain, bloating, and maldigestion. If these bacteria gain the upper hand in your intestines, they will fight to stay in control, making it harder for good bacteria to take hold. So you lose the benefits of the good bacteria, getting toxins instead.

Some downright ugly effects of bad flora are tendencies to promote obesity, various autoimmune diseases, and cancer. The toxic byproducts can be carcinogenic, and even if not, the chronic inflammation they cause can lead to cancer. Having to deal with the garbage from these bacteria occupies the immune system, diverting it from its normal job of protecting you from invading diseases, and some of those toxins may lodge in portions of your body, such as joints, which the immune system attacks and tears up in an effort to get rid of the garbage. Bad flora can have a similar destructive effect on the pancreas, leading to type 1 diabetes. They can also lead to type 2 diabetes: in a study published in Cell, researchers ran a study across 800 people, over 46,898 meals, where all ate the same meals daily, and they found widely varying levels of blood sugar in the participants — this was due to the differing gut flora across the participants.

Everyone’s talking
“Crosstalk” occurs between your gut flora and your body. Even though not strictly part of your body, the flora signals in various ways to your nervous system and brain. They are either signaling health or disease. The gut is your “second brain” because of all the nerves throughout your intestines, and they talk constantly with your brain. This is another reason why you should care about promoting healthy gut flora.

Your intestinal microbes: there are more of them than there is of you — your cells are outnumbered by those of your gut flora. When they talk, they talk loudly. Your brain responds to their demands: researchers from the University of Leipzig Medical Center produced a study, published in Gut, which showed variation in the reward-related brain activation for sugar — participants eating a prebiotic that supported flora which digest plant fibers lowered their desire for sugar over the 14-day test period. This was simple feedback: the participants were eating more plant fibers, the gut bacteria that liked that food multiplied, and communicated to the brain their desire for less sugar, which would fuel their competitors. You could expect the opposite with a high sugar, low fiber diet: the sugar-loving bacteria would multiply and demand even more sugar to support their growth. The brain, getting that signal, would start craving the high sugar, and now you have sugar addiction. When your system adjusts to a type of food because the gut flora has changed to accommodate that food, you tend to desire that food more.

“Yo-yo” diets occur when you haven’t managed to break the addiction, partly because your gut flora isn’t supporting the change. If you diet with the wrong foods, you may succeed in changing your food desires, but perhaps not in a way that supports your diet goals. The bacteria that will provide the best nutrition, lower sugar cravings, and lower risk of many diseases are those that feed on uncooked (raw) vegetables. Those are the ones you want to promote. The shift won’t happen all at once; some patience is necessary, but the results are well worth it. Don’t try to force your gut to work the way you intend — you didn’t design it.

Dr. Nemec’s Review

Your intestinal tract is such a major component of your health. We cannot express that enough-the food you eat: it’s not just a matter of calories, it’s a matter of life or death, health or disease. You have at least 10 times more bacteria living in your intestinal tract than all the hundred trillion cells in your body. That is a lot of cells and those cells have a voice a very strong voice over your health. That’s why it’s not an option to eat healthy: if you don’t eat health-promoting foods you will eventually get sick with a disease — it’s just a matter of time.

Remember, disease starts silently, quietly, and then continues to grow until it hits its peak amount of inflammation and then you have a symptom, but the first symptom can be years of intestinal insult before you realize the damage you have done. It will most likely show itself with a disease like cancer, heart disease, stroke, autoimmune disease, diabetes, neurological disease, digestive disease, arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol — just to name a few. We have had many patients at Revolution New Medicine over the last 40 years that felt great, thought they were healthy, exercised regularly, took supplements, were the ideal body weight — but when taking an initial history, we would ask, ”tell us what you eat in detail?” The answer most likely is the American diet, or we will call it their own healthy version of the American diet — meaning they ate a bit better than everyone they know.

What you eat is beyond critically important, as the studies have shown. What you eat totally commands the 10x amount of bacteria growing in your intestinal tract, and those bacteria control a large part of your overall health, especially your levels of inflammation and toxicity.

So, as the first study showed, there are four benefits of eating a living, raw plant-based diet, high in plant fibers, phytochemicals, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals.

The first benefit is simply ownership. Simply whichever bacteria was there first and has the numbers to maintain that position will dominate the field, or in this case the intestinal tract. What does this mean? It means if you eat the right food and have done so for a long period of time you have replaced the bad bacteria, the pathogenic bacteria, with the good bacteria, the anti-inflammatory, anti-toxic bacteria. It’s all a matter of numbers and time, but if the good outweighs the bad, then the bad eventually is forced to leave.

The second benefit is that they boost your immune system. And your immune system is what keeps you from getting sick, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

The third benefit is that the good bacteria produce a chemical that repels bad bacteria, so not only does it gradually outnumber the bad bacteria, but from the start, the good bacteria secrete chemicals that the bad bacteria do not want to grow in.

The fourth benefit is: by avoiding sugar and high carbs in your diet, you prevent growing of these very toxic and inflammation-producing bad bacteria in the intestinal tract.

It is very important to understand the concept of lignans from vegetables and seeds. These are natural components to plants, and once they’re digested properly by the beneficial bacteria in the gut, they produce a host of health benefits, including preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease. So beware of anyone who says plants, vegetables, seeds, or raw food in general, has harmful effects on your health. It absolutely is the reverse, so use wisdom when you take in information from the world. Don’t assume that anyone is the final authority. Look to nature. Listen to your heart, not your mind.

The second study was quite interesting. The researchers took a large group of people and had them eat the same exact food, yet their blood sugar varied greatly. What does that tell you? You would think if they ate the same food, they would have the same blood sugar overall. Not the case: the wide variety of blood sugar levels was primarily due to the different bacteria growing in their intestinal tract. Some of the detrimental bacteria actually raised the blood sugar, whereas the beneficial health-promoting bacteria actually decreased the blood sugar.

The third study demonstrated that when you eat plant fibers, which grow good intestinal flora, this communicates to the brain and the neurotransmitters, “Please give me more plants and plant fibers, and less carbs and sugars”. This message that the plant fiber digestion sent to the brain was not only “give me more plant and plant fibers”, but also “don’t give me sugar and carb-containing foods, I don’t want them anymore”.

Now, isn’t this quite amazing: just by eating raw plants, raw vegetables, and leafy green vegetables — putting these into the intestinal tract — they grow the bacteria that are beneficial for your health and longevity. They are anti-inflammatory, anti-toxic, and have an added benefit: they are anti-carb craving and anti-sugar desiring. Since your intestinal tract has so many nerves that go to to it, it has been called the second brain because it affects your whole health that much. It not only communicates to the brain, but it tells the brain what to do.

Your digestive system is so critical to your health and survival that it contains the enteric nervous system which communications to the brain — which runs the entire body, all hundred trillion cells. So the intestinal tract has the highest priority, the most authoritative voice. Any message coming from the gut, the brain listens to and carries out: it never tries to overrule the intestinal tract. It always submits to the messages that the intestinal tract sends.

With this in mind, what is the best way to break a food addiction, especially a sugar or carbohydrate addiction? To eat a living, raw, plant-based diet with a low glycemic index until the good bacteria grow numerous enough to tell the brain and the neurotransmitters “we do not want sugar anymore” — as easy as that, the addiction is eventually broken. This it is done simply from the intestinal tract telling the brain and the body what to do.

So remember the next time you eat, choose your food very, very, very wisely — not only does it affect your health, your level of vitality, your longevity, but it also affects your mental-emotional state. Your intestinal tract rules over your brain, not the other way around.
